What if... from lines to circles to spirals?

What if we evolved our learning metaphor from line to circle to cone (or spiral)?

How might it change the way we think about curriculum and assessment?

A line ends at a specific point.

A circle goes around and around.

A cone, or spiral, traces the same circumference as a circle, but goes higher—or deeper, depending on your metaphor—as we practice and then reflect on that experience.

We’re either learning (and therefore growing) or we’re atrophying. Same goes for our students.

Let’s select metaphors that will set them up not just for the handful of years during which they’re in our care, but for the many decades left in their lives.
