Three Kind of Normal, Updated

In “Three Kinds of Normal,” I proposed some frames for thinking about how COVID-19 will shape the future of learning.

I referred to this current moment as the “New Normal,” but a better term is the “New Interim Normal.” We are already starting to approach the Next Normal, which will be here before we know it.

For another perspective, check out Greg Bamford’s “It’s Time to Design for Resilience.” Greg doesn’t impose rigid timeframes nor does he use the language of “Three Normals,” but his phases feel congruent with what I have proposed:

  • New Interim Normal = Triage

  • Next Normal = Adaptation

  • Future Normal = Resilience

Your capacity to adapt and demonstrate resilience will ultimately be determined by your organization’s culture.

Are you designing your culture for the Next Normal and the Future Normal?
