The B-Suite

Carlos Watson is the first interview for “The B-Suite,” a new interview series by Adam Bryant and Rhonda Morris on LinkedIn.

I was already an avid reader of Adam Bryan’t leadership journalism [1] when we invited him to speak at Malvern Prep in 2014. [2]

As we walked across campus, he gave me another reason to admire his work: He shared that he had made a promise to himself that his “The Corner Office” interview series would include at least 50% women and people of color.

“I have a platform,” he said, “and I feel the obligation to use it for good.” He hoped to expand his readership’s notion of what excellent leadership looked like—literally.

Anyone who takes the art and science of leadership seriously ought to read Bryant’s work. And now he has given us yet another good reason: yesterday he and his partner Rhonda Morris launched a new interview series on LinkedIn called “Leading in the B Suite”:

“Our goal is to share the lessons and stories of inspirational leaders to help spark more conversations about race in corporate America and what should be done to increase the representation of Black leaders in the C-Suite (thus the B-Suite name).”

Don’t be fooled: Bryant’s journalism may center on “corporate America,” but the vast majority of lessons apply to nonprofit and public service leaders.

Pound for pound, Bryant’s writing on leadership is the best I’ve found. It is consistently insightful, empathetic, concise, and most of all practical. Combine that with a focus on how Black executives can enrich our understanding of the challenges and opportunities to build diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in our organizations’ leadership, and you have an obvious resource to tap.

I have subscribed to “Leading in the B-Suite,” and encourage you to do the same. [3]

[1] Bryant created “The Corner Office” interview series for the New York Times, wrote one book with the same title, and another book called Quick & Nimble. He currently publishes his leadership interviews on LinkedIn, and his latest book on “the leadership x factor” will come out in 2021.

[2] Bryant returned in 2017 to interview Gen. Stanley McChrystal in front of a live audience.
